When it's more than just practicality..

Dr P. said something ytd which striked me.

He asked "what do u guys come university for?"
"Is it to see me? Is it to learn something new? Is because you enjoy learning?"

"NO! you guys come because- you know- coming to university will get you a job."
and he continued to explain that, in other countries, there are many retirees who return back universities to study because they really enjoy learning new things. Unfortunately, the same thing doesnt happen in Singapore.

Yesterday at home, mummy was urging my brother to study, and said, EVEN IF YOU GET A BACHELOR DEGREE, YOU WILL FACE KEEN COMPETITION. So .. . blah blah.

At the end of the day, getting a degree is still about getting a job or a well-paid job.

While i'm disgusted at this particular culture, i know, sadly, i'm part of the larger society who thinks the same way too. Getting a diploma/degree/whatever certificate, is nothing more than hoping to get a good job.

Thankyou dear for always listening to all my stories of what i've learnt in sociology. heehee :D
